The foundation of IMD was built upon the invention of the Gertie Marx® Needle, created and produced by Walter Zohmann. This atraumatic needle introduced a new innovative design that dramatically reduced post-dural puncture headache (PDPH) in Obstetric Anesthesia. For 30+ years, this has resulted in improved patient safety and comfort for patients across the globe.
A collaboration that started 40 years ago was inspired by one of the pioneers of Obstetric Anesthesia, Dr Gertie Marx. The introduction of the Gertie Marx needle inspired innovation in medical practice and methodology. From our earliest days working with Dr. Gertie Marx, we have continued to work with doctors across the globe making continued improvements to our highly regarded atraumatic needle design.

Dr. Marx was well known for her devotion to science and produced many ground breaking studies that paved the way for major transformations in Anesthesia. Known to many as the Mother of Obstetric Anesthesia, Dr. Marx dedicated her life to advancing technology and improving medical techniques, tools, and practices that have resulted in major advancements to the field of Obstetrics and Anesthesia in general.
Dr. Marx continues to impact the field of obstetrics through her ground breaking work and also through the legacy of doctors she trained and inspired. Her contributions to doctors is matched only by her impact to transforming patient care through innovation, hard work and good science.
